Yesterday’s results: 1-3
The Lightning got the W, so the Jacket ML didn’t hit, but hey, at least I was right about not betting Tampa’s puck line. I’m counting that as half of a win in the unofficial Puck Buddy statistics. Darcy Kuemper did in fact come down to Earth and there was an avalanche of goals from Colorado (I’m booing myself, don’t worry) for a puck line win (+145). Nathan MacKinnon looked unstoppable, and Cale Makar scored a beauty, capitalizing on some suspect one-on-one defensive play by Arizona.
I was on the Bruins puck line for +205, and it looked to be dead in the water as Boston entered the third period down 2-0. But good lord, the B’s woke up from hibernation (ughhh) and rattled off 4 goals before Carolina even registered a shot on goal. Up 4-2 late with Reimer pulled for the extra skater, I started counting my winning. Unfortunately karma bit me in the ass, the Canes added a late one to make it 4-3, and the dream died.
I didn’t watch the Blues game but apparently Ryan O’Reilly broke through his offensive struggles like they were a Tim Horton’s drive-through, beating the Canucks 3-1 and my Vancouver money line bet. Time to get back on track. For reference, please find my series predictions here.
Flyers v. Canadiens – 3:00 ET – Flyers lead series 2-1
I’m stubborn. I said I would bet the Habs’ opponents puck line until Montreal is eliminated or wins the Cup. “I’m a man of my word.” – the late Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight, circa 2008. PICK: Flyers PL (+195)
Flames v. Stars – 5:30 ET – Series tied 2-2
I was able to hit the 3-way money line draw last game (and due to a late night scoring change, a correct OT scorer in Radulov), and I still feel like this series is a coin flip. It looks like Matthew Tkachuk will still be out with a concussion (not confirmed) which I think tips the scales in favor of Dallas. PICK: Stars 3-way ML (+125)
Capitals v. Islanders – 8:00 ET – Islanders lead series 3-0
No chance this Capitals team gets swept, right? I figured New York would give the Caps a fight, but I never expected this. A lot has been written in the past week or so that the teams that “want to stay in the bubble” are at a huge advantage. This line of thinking essentially says that teams that have won recently simply don’t have the motivation to compete in these unusual circumstances (see: Penguins, Caps, Blues). I think that’s horseshit, and too dismissive of the opponents those teams have faced. Washington has a veteran group with a lot of pride, I think they find the win here. I hate giving juice, but I don’t have confidence in the puck line. PICK: Capitals ML (-105)
Blackhawks v. Golden Knights – 10:30 ET – Golden Knights lead series 3-1
Corey Crawford was deservedly the first, second, and third stars of the Hawks’ game 4 win (NBC’s broadcast, for once, did a good). Chicago has some good, young talent, but they can’t compete with Vegas’s depth. I think the 12th place team in the Western Conference’s regular season gets eliminated tonight. HOWEVER, the Knights ML is at -200, with the puck line at a meager +125. I HATE those odds. Here’s hoping Chicago plays a tight defensive game to avoid elimination, and the goaltenders shine. PICK: Under 5.5 (+115)
